GAQP Submits Formal Letter to UN Human Rights Bodies on Stockholm Event
The South Azerbaijan Liberation Party (GAQP) has submitted a formal letter to several United Nations human rights mechanisms regarding a protest and conference held in Stockholm on 13 December 2025. The letter was addressed to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, and the Special Rapporteur on the right to self-determination.
In its submission, GAQP outlined the purpose and content of the one-day action organized by the Council for Cooperation of South Azerbaijan Organizations (GATƏŞ), emphasizing that the initiative aimed to convey the political demands of South Azerbaijan to the international community.
The party stated that “the issue of South Azerbaijan cannot be reduced to language, culture, or limited civil rights, but is fundamentally a matter of full political independence”. The letter also raised concerns about the detention of hundreds of political activists in Iran, describing the situation as political repression.
GAQP called on international human rights institutions to take note of the Stockholm action and to respond to what it described as systematic violations of the rights of South Azerbaijanis and other non-Persian peoples in Iran.
