Mass Migration, National Security and the Future of South Azerbaijan
The recent mass movement of people from Morocco toward Spain has once again brought issues of border security, state sovereignty, and migration policy to the forefront of international debate. This development demonstrates that, in the 21st century, large-scale population movements cannot be explained solely by social or economic factors.
In many cases, such developments emerge as a consequence of regional conflicts, interstate confrontations, transnational human-smuggling networks, political manipulation, and geopolitical competition. Consequently, mass migration should no longer be viewed merely as a humanitarian issue; it has also become an important matter of national security and geopolitical stability.
This reality is equally relevant to South Azerbaijan.
Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, the weakening of state institutions, the expansion of armed groups, and continuing geopolitical transformations across the region may create similar risks in the geographical environment surrounding South Azerbaijan.
History demonstrates that our region has experienced large-scale population movements during previous wars and political crises. These developments have produced not only humanitarian consequences but also significant social, economic, and demographic impacts.
For this reason, every large-scale and uncontrolled movement of people carried out under humanitarian circumstances should be carefully assessed from the perspective of the security and long-term stability of the Azerbaijani Turkic Nation.
The South Azerbaijan Liberation Party (SALP / GAQP) firmly believes that every human being possesses an inherent right to life, dignity, and fundamental freedoms. Providing protection and humanitarian assistance to individuals fleeing war, persecution, and oppression is both a moral responsibility and an obligation under international law.
At the same time, every state has the legitimate right to protect its borders, combat illegal human-smuggling networks, regulate irregular mass migration in accordance with the rule of law, preserve demographic balance, and safeguard social stability.
SALP (GAQP) reiterates that no people should ever be identified with the actions of armed organizations, terrorist groups, or geopolitical projects.
The Kurdish people are among the peoples of our region. Azerbaijanis and Kurds have lived side by side for centuries in relations of neighborhood and coexistence. This historical reality should never be exploited by terrorist organizations or political agendas, nor should it be used to undermine peaceful coexistence among the peoples of the region.
The Azerbaijani Turkic Nation and its centuries-old tradition of statehood have historically provided a framework in which different peoples could live together on the basis of equal rights. The future State of South Azerbaijan shall continue this tradition by building a democratic order founded upon justice, equality, and the rule of law.
Accordingly, the future state of South Azerbaijan should be based upon the following fundamental principles:
- Respect for human rights and human dignity;
- Effective protection of internationally recognized borders;
- The rule of law;
- Prevention of illegal and organized mass migration through lawful means;
- Preservation of demographic balance and social stability;
- Equal rights and equal citizenship for all individuals regardless of their ethnic origin, religion, or denomination.
We firmly believe that national security and human rights are not contradictory values. A strong constitutional state derives its legitimacy from its ability to protect both simultaneously.
Current developments around the world demonstrate that states must prepare not only for today’s crises but also for the strategic risks of tomorrow.
South Azerbaijan should build its future upon the principles of democracy, the rule of law, national unity, responsible statehood, and equal rights for all its citizens.
